Welcome!
After I graduated college in 2004, I began offering computer repair in Sarasota and Venice providing on-site setups, installations, and tutoring in homes and offices. I saw potential - and a real need in offering remote support to home users. Florida has its share of seasonal residents, so when they go North for the Winter, I was faced with the reality of my customers finding someone locally elsewhere to work on their computer! When I began to offer remote support, I was relieved to know most of my income would not dry up in the off-season and more importantly for my clients - they could rest assured that someone they already trust is only a few clicks away!
I needed a website, and initially I was going to have one built for me, but thought I was quite capable to teach myself how to do it. Plus, the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to retain full control over the design and content. I decided to build the site from scratch using only free and open source software. All the pages, logos, and even the underlying technology was designed so I would not be a slave to any proprietary system or piece of software. I began on Windows, but when Apple came out with a $500 Mac Mini in 2005 I thought it was high-time I shift my focus beyond the gates of Microsoft. I sought out software solutions in cross-platform environments, strongly believing that really great software can and should be available to you regardless of what operating system you choose to use.
My real appreciation for free and open source software really started to take hold in 2003 when I took an introductory Linux class. I had used Linux some in early 1999, but began to see its potential on the desktop a few years later when I was thinking of starting a business. By leveraging free and open source software, I could keep operating costs low, and not be tied to restrictive proprietary licensing schemes and file formats. That meant by promoting the use of open standards I would not be in an endless costly upgrade cycle to retain control of my own data.
Bottom line is this: I believe in being open and honest. I think everyone's needs are served best when there is nothing to hide, and we all share our ideas with one another. Everyone wins when we hold everything that is near and dear to us to the highest possible standards.
